Hellsing series Review
« on: April 25, 2011, 12:18:46 AM »

Synopsis: Hellsing follows the antiheroic vampire, Alucard, and a police girl-turned-vampire, Seras Victoria, two vampires employed by the vampire-extermination group of England, the Hellsing Organization. Slowly but surely, through their active duty, they find a new breed of vampires beginning to arise.

Review:
Hellsing was recommended to me. So I did not pick up this series at random. I was informed by the recommend-er that the Protagonist is the coolest guy ever. Since I'm a sucker for the lone wolf Type, I instantly jumped into this series.
The Anime starts with a police woman Seras Victoria, attempting to stop a vampire and losing her life in the process. Alucard(the protagonist) in order to save her, turns her into a vampire, by the usual method everyone knows. These 2 then hunt down "evil" vampires while working under an organization.

The plus point in this series is, Victoria struggling to cope with her new self. I found this part of the Anime very interesting. The reason why Alucard works for the Organisation also makes for an interesting watch.

The negatives, well.. the recommend-er wasn't wrong. He is a cool guy. But the problem in this Anime is, almost everyone is cool, not just the protagonist. So the whole "cool" atmosphere starts to become monotonous very soon. Normally in other Anime the lone wolf cool types are often teamed up with other characters and this creates a balance. In Hellsing this balance is completely lacking and hence the coolness becomes monotonous very fast. As a direct result of this, I couldn't like a single character in this series, except for Victoria.
The other flaw is, the protagonist is extremely strong. You could say he is both invincible and invulnerable. So there is no awe or unpredictability during fights. You know who is going to win even before the fight starts. So the whole point of a fight becomes meaningless for the audience who generally look forward for a showdown in an action anime like this. This alone kills the Anime single-handedly. Add to that the fight choreography leaves much to be desired.

Hellsing would have been an excellent Anime if the power level between protagonists and antagonists was properly balanced. The imbalance simply kills the Anime for any serious action loving fan.

I'll give Hellsing 1.5 stars: ***

Yeah, gotta agree somewhat. One of the few animes that I have actually dropped. I got about half way through last summer and it just bored me.

Pretty good review, as the series went on I felt a bit bored even though I enjoyed it. Haven't watched Hellsing Ultimate yet, waiting for the 8th episode to come out.

I always hated the End Dub voice of Seras Victoria in Hellsing, but for alucard it was way cool.

Hellsing Ultimate has far better animation and also follows the original manga.

This one is recommended for you guys who are not satisfied with Hellsing, but slowly am starting to hate it myself coz of the anime makers stupid idea of releasing each OVA every 6 months and only 4 OVA have been Dubbed.

Victoria's English dub is fine to me. It sounds natural and appropriate, just what's supposed an innocent young policegirl would be.
The making of TV series is said to be lacking funds in the later episodes, and there are more idled scrolling images rather than full moving action scenes. However, I have to mention the bgm is quite OK all through.

A true Hellsing fan should watch the manga. For me, I'm looking forward to the next OVA.
