Definitive female characters in anime

Most of the anime are based on male protagonists. You very rarely come across a definitive female character. Is there any female character that impressed you?

There is always Major Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell) Apart form that you can include the likes of... likes of... uff... Ah! yes... Silent Mobius...

I say, what is an anime without females... 8)

Indeed very few anime have a female character as the main protagonist....

GITS is basically the only one coming to mind right now..... and Silent Mobius....... Gene Shaft was another one I guess....... but other than those I am hard pressed to find one....... just cant remember right now.......ahh yes Elfen Lied......and Otogizoushi.......also can be included I suppose.......

ok u guys talk abt action oriented female characters rite.

i would like to talk abt the female characters with strong will. and the characters are Sarah from Princess Sarah and Remi of Nobody' Girl. even though those anime are for kids, the characters have a very strong will to win in life rite.

And Card Captor Sakura too when you're talking about it. I don't know, I haven't read enough from the CLAMP house... but most of their creations are women oriented.

Well Grenadier is another one I kinda forgot to mention........... and Solty Rei could also count as one.......

I say what is anime without females?

Female characters are extremely important facet of the story line and definitely should not be taken as some arm candy role types...

On the contrary of what I've seen from fan sites and other places on the net... it is the female character that dominates the scene...

Well cause you will see that the percentage of males on those fansites is significantly higher....... and females generally stick to promoting their own gender.........

I am not saying that females are only arm candy..... but they have to fill in the role of arm candy too....... cause thats what pulls in more viewers......sex appeal.........

Apart from the ones already mentioned

Heidi is anime...... the Japanese have made several adaptations of stories from the West......

20000 Leagues under the Sea and even Moby Dick have been animated (With several (pretty bigz) differences of course.....)
