Sketching Techniques...
« on: March 19, 2007, 05:58:18 PM »
Let me tell you before hand... I'm not an artist and neither do I know very good sketching myself...  :-" But, I see that everyone here has a small amount of hidden desire to draw their favorite anime character...

So, I'll start this thread where we can share our experiences of sketching characters/art/still life/etc... I'm sure if we try, then everyone of us will be able to draw anything with ease...

I'm just starting this thread. It's not some lesson... so I'll wait until I land with a question that I can answer. And yes... I can't answer all questions, so I will expect some other people to help me out as well... We are all novice in this field so far. And if you're a professional... I'm happy!!! You can teach us some basics...

As SG mentioned, to start with you can share your drawing techniques while drawing sketches/wallpapers.

Also, if anyone is having questions on sketching a character/technique, they can put it here. I hope other members (including me) can try their bit to help them.

@Arr0wHead: you can go ahead and post the links to the manga drawing tutorials, Lets have a feedback from our members on those as well.

Of course... I had a few links which are devoted to sketching anime characters.... They helped me to some extent.

And the reason why I said I'd explain was the fact that I don't have a scanner. It usually best if one can see how to draw rather than read a few vague lines and make sense out of them.

It would have been the best if I could show you how to do it... But... :(

I haven't tried out drawing anime characters yet. But for general drawings... start drawing with H pencils. Don't press the lead hard while drawing and don't erase often. These r the onlt tips i know  :-"

Yup... Logical advise from Zatura.

To add to that... You should always have light hands (not pressing hard on the paper). When you have done a rough sketch with a HB pencil, move to a 2B pencil and make the shadows. Create the outlines and work the darker regions of your drawing with a 4B or 6B Pencil. But whatever happens... dont press on the paper...

You can also get a darker tone if you move the pencil over and over again the same line.

I think the most important thing is to not be afraid of screwing up....... if you are worried that it will look bad before you start then you will end up going nowhere...... if you go wrong theres always the eraser...... or a new sheet of paper........ practice is the key...... you will learn on your own.......

When I started I used to be so terrible...... now I have improved but I need to go a lot further.......

About the lead (2H 2B whatever) I use only HB .5 mechanical pencil....... HB works best for me....... recently however I bought myself a new .3 mechanical pencil...... that works better for the finer details..... but not a good tool to make a complete sketch by itself.........

I cant make shadows very well as yet......

With this post I become the first Daimyoo!!

The art of making shadows is not difficult either...

Remember, shadows are made because light falling from a direction is not able to reach an area. If you have imagined the source of light... then you can also imagine the regions where light wont reach. You simply shade those regions dark.

For example... see any wallpaper or try to understand by making observations of other sketches. See the shadows and try to imagine from where the light is coming. Is it right in front of the subject? Or sideways or behind it. If it's behind, the whole subject will appear dark. If it's sideways, the side facing the light source is lighter and the side not facing it is darker.

I understand your feelings... (Thermofluids can't be that bad... extremely important topic for rockets...)

I don't have a scanner... Let me work on some existing templates and I'll make a post tommorow... if possible... (Even I have some Organic Chemistry to cram for exams...)

For the time being... it's try try until you succeed.
