The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
« on: May 17, 2007, 09:12:50 AM »
Ok...since this anime sounds good, I went out looking for a short synopsis..and wiki has this to say

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya follows the high school life of Haruhi Suzumiya and those who are caught up in her antics. While Haruhi is the central character to the plot, the story is told from the point of view of Kyon, one of Haruhi's classmates.

Kyon is an ordinary freshman high school student who only recently given up his fantasies of espers, time travelers, aliens etc. as he left middle school. When he chooses to speak to one eccentric girl by the name of Haruhi Suzumiya, he unwittingly sets off a chain of events which drag him into surreal situations; he is drawn further into a world eerily like the fantasies he had just managed to outgrow, with Haruhi Suzumiya at its center.

Searching for a group that interests her, Haruhi joins and quits every club in school finding only dissatisfaction. Kyon makes a snide remark about her actions and accidentally provides Haruhi the inspiration to create a club of her own. To help start the club, Haruhi forcefully drafts Kyon, who only stays in the club to protect (or try to protect) other helpless victims of Haruhi's "voluntary arrests". As the story progresses, Kyon finds that each of these supposedly "helpless victims" has a specific reason to be there.

Must say...maybe a synopsis from a person who has watched it would be better...

Just watched Episodes one and two...

Must say,, the first one was pure genius..
You think it's total Bullshit, until you realize whats happening in the end...

Second one was a lot more sensible...but still crazy..in a funny kind of way...

It just keeps getting crazier.... and I think you meant - "funny in a crazy sort of way...." the fact that the episodes are not chronological is the really weird part.

I made the blunder of reading the manga... which unlike the anime, is in proper order. But the anime is better, trust me.

And what about the Hare Hare Yukai dance?

Kyon's expression is hilarious in that... especially when he wears that moose hat.

And I thought I'll share this picture here. It's by a bunch of DN cosplayers (Miguel, Jin and China) who are pretty famous in the DN fandom. DN+Purikura= hilarious crack.

Hare Hare Yukai??...
The ending song? the one that starts with nazo nazo?
the whole crazy dance sequence?
I don't see Kyon in a Moose hat as yet...

But the story was a bit predictable after you realize what Yuki is...
Now I'm on episode 5 (in the Kyon order)
But things are getting more unpredictable again...

@Durach-WHERE DID YOU GET THE MANGA!!!
I thought there were 'light novels' and no manga..

No.The light novels are like your normal english novels, text and about 10 illustrations.

I found it more interesting, since it continues the story.

You can read it here.

I checked the first four episodes of the series on fansubs - in the Kyon's order. (my LE DVDs will arrive next month. Yay!)

And yeah its amusing all right. But what I liked was the way character of Haruhi stood out from the 2 episode itself (there was nothing in the first episode related to Haruhi anyway)

She's got that one track mind, persuasiveness (*scary*), and still interestingly she is quite intelligent while dealing with people.

Mikuru is adorable all right. Yeah, her pink nurse outfit and bunny costume are sold out commodity in anime figure circle. *must get one*.

I also liked the way the character of Kyon was drawn and the way he was used to narrate the story.

Character design is very well done and unique. Each of them matches their characters distinctly.

That's strange. But what I read was no novelisation. Full fledged manga, believe me.

Haruhi is really a complex character. The sort of arrogant person you don't really want to meet in real life but you like to watch from a safe distance. Haruhis are rare but there is a Kyon in every one of us.

animeindia, should I ask what you plan to do with something like that? Hmm. On second thoughts, I don't really want to know. lol. You are giving out that strange vibe... the one which that crazy otaku in Midori no Hibi had. The only figurine I'd want from the show is of Kyon and Haruhi.... And another thought, animeindia, could you take a picture of your figurine collection and post it. I am just curious.

Ha ha ha.... that one was good Durach! * still can't stop, tries very hard to stop! ha ha ...*

Well, you see I love collecting anime merchandise and I pride in having some very rare and hard to find anime stuffs whether these be DVDs, artbooks, figure in my collection.

With the experience that have I gathered from last few years, I am usually spot-on when it comes to guessing which items will be OOP and will command a good collector’s value. Being a collector, I try to get them ASAP, rather than wait and pay a princely sum later on.

From this series, the Haruhi figure should be arriving soon. Luckily, I pre-order it as it’s sold out now! It’s the same with Mikuru figure.

Regarding your request of displaying my collection. I can, but you will have to wait for some time.

Why? The thing is when the figures arrive, I check them for any visible damage  (I'm very picky there). Put them back in a translucent protective material then cover it with brown cover paper and seal them. It would be a real pain to unwrap all of them, as I haven't labeled them * yeah that's pretty dumb *.

How long? About 3 months. By then I will be getting a room exclusively for my anime collection, with special cabinets for DVDs and figure * finally persuaded my mom for this *. Presently these are in my room piled in big boxes and it really looks like a warehouse.

[EDIT: I have edited this post and some of the following posts as they were not relevant to this thread and were causing unnecessary distractions. I will post the images to the "Hobby Discussion" section.]

animeindia-san, I've said it before and I'll say it again. God, I envy you.

The oh-so famous pose of Haruhi. One can never get tired of seeing that pose. It's like she is asking for attention. By the way, two different arm tags? One must say 'The head of SOS-dan' and the other? Or is it the same thing?

And such a cute figurine of L? He looks so thin, slender, watchful...

*dies*

And insomniac CHIBI L on a chair?

*dies again*

Oh, I miss my adorable crouching detective.

I think I'll shut up now before I make this thread go out of topic.
