IRC Guide
« on: June 03, 2007, 05:50:30 PM »
After numerous copypasting, editing, typing, taking screenshots,uploading...here is my IRC Guide(sorry for any typos and grammar mistakes)

NOTE: THIS GUIDE IS mIRC ONLY.links are all in the last post.

What is IRC?

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. All it really is, is a program designed to allow people to chat with each other.
You join a "server", which hosts a bunch of "channels". However, since it's creation, it's been slowly modified to do a lot of other things besides chatting. Which is why we use it now to download anime, manga and a bunch of other things.

How do I get onto IRC?

First, get a client. Mirc and Hydra IRC are the best ones out there (and the ones I use)You use a client to connect to the IRC servers. IRC is really just a concept and a set of guidelines. Anyone can use any client to connect to any server.

1. DOWNLOAD MIRC CLIENT.

2. INSTALL MIRC (This shouldn’t be too hard, right)

After installing the client the folder should look something like this.

GETTING STARTED ON Mirc:

Registering your nick:

The first thing you see when you open mirc is this window.

Fill your full name(any name)email address(any email), nickname and an alternative nickname. Choose ok.

If someone else is already using the Nick Name you you've chosen on IRC, you will be known by this alternate name instead. (ie, Kreet2)

CONNECTING TO A SERVER/JOINING A CHANNEL:

What is a server?

Servers hold channels and channels hold people, and in those channels you acquire files and chat. A server on IRC is just like any website server on the internet, it's just a computer that hosts a bunch of things. In this case, it runs a server version of IRC, that allows it to act as a network, linking hundreds and even thousands of people together. There are tons and tons of servers, most of which, you will never visit unless you go out of your way too.

HOW DO I CONNECT TO SERVER?

Go to file tab click on select servers, select the server you want double click on random server

click on connect server, and that should connect you to the server you want.

After connecting it should look something like this.

How do i join a channel?

/join #channelname

That’s all you have to do to join channel, just make sure you’re on the right server and connected to that server.

Eg: /join #animanda(rizon)     /join #lurk(IRCHighway)

How do I start my own channel?

/join #channelname

The server will automatically create the channel if it dosen’t exist, keep in mind this is only temporary (it will close if there are no people on the channel).

Using Bakaupdates.com/mangaupdates.com to join a channel:

First and foremost go to bakaupdates.com(for anime)or mangaupdates.com(for manga),then browse group list(check screenshot)click on irc channel next to the fansub group.

You should most likely see this, then choose launch application(screenshot).

This will open irc and you will see this window, choose the option that you want and click ok.

That will automatically connect you to the channel you want.

AGAIN DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD NOW.

DOWNLOADING:

First off, DCC stands for Direct Client-to-Client. What's the difference between DCC chat or DCC anything and regular chat on channels? There's no server between you and the other guy. If you DCC chat it means you are directly connected to that person, no server involved. Why? Because it wouldn't make a lot of sense to send a file from him, to the server, then to you; when you could just send the file from him to you. You can /msg a person to talk privately with them and still have the server between you. If you DCC chat with them, it's usually because you want to transfer a file. There are two common types of DCC transfers that anime viewers like you and me have to deal with. XDCC bots and FSERVs. XDCC was initially a giant script written by a guy by the nick of "Xabi" in the mid-90's. The X just means eXtended, because the script extended DCC (Direct Client-to-Client) protocol to include some other stuff. Now we use it to refer to these bots that have extended DCC protocol that allows them to handle and send large files automatically, without having to enter a DCC chat first. FSERV's and XDCC bots do the same thing, but XDCC bots are usually hosted by the fansubber's themselves and don't require DCC chat to download files or browse, they just start a DCC transfer immediately after receiving and accepting a command.

I’ll just tell you about xdcc bots here, ‘cause FSERVs is too complicated for 13 year old brain and dcc is kind of useless if you don’t want to get or send a file to somebody.

Whenever you join a channel you will see the user list and some signs prefixed on some users, they are owner (~)admin (&)operators(@) voiced users (+)and half ops(%) and normal users who leechers like you and me.

HOW DO YOU KNOW WHICH USERS ARE XDCC BOTS?

*they more often than not are either half ops or voiced users.
*some bots have the fansubbing/scanlating group name before them like K-F|Smoker (Kaizoku-Fansubs) AniM|Notes(animanda),remember that not all bots have this .
*xdcc list(see below)
*ask in the channel (not recommended, don’t blame me if you get kicked, banned or flamed.)
*browse their homepage.

xdcc list?

So now that you the bot name, how do you  what files are in the bot?

For that just type this on the channel window

/msg <botname> xdcc list
/msg K-F|Smoker xdcc list

there are three ways the channel will tell you the bot list:
*link to a website
*.txt file to download
*or it will show you the botlist on the channel window

whatever way you should see something like this.

#1 109x [225M] [K-F_AKUPX]_One_Piece_001_[44899E42].avi
#2 100x [225M] [K-F_AKUPX]_One_Piece_002_[DC2AFB03].avi
#3 92x [225M] [K-F_AKUPX]_One_Piece_003_[E8C81815].avi
#4 89x [178M] [K-F_AKUPX]_One_Piece_004_[35E8EC6F].avi
#5 82x [171M] [K-F_AKUPX]_One_Piece_005_[89BA23B1].avi
#6 84x [171M] [K-F_AKUPX]_One_Piece_006_[84AB1A9C].avi
#7 87x [180M] [K-F_AKUPX]_One_Piece_007_[CFA2D23E].avi
….and so on.

The things to keep in mind are the bot name(K-F|Smoker) and the bot no.(#1,#2,#3……..)

So to download you have to type this in the channel window.

/msg <botname> xdcc send <bot no.>

/msg K-F|Smoker xdcc send #1

And you should see this

Turning ignore off:

Your mIRC client is set to ignore many file types so just turn the ignore off (see below)

THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH.

AND DO NOT POST.

well, you don't have to pay if that's what you mean, just choose continue, all it does is waste you ten seconds on your irc time.

I chose mIRC because it's the easiest for newbies.

I don't know about kvirc,never used it.

Impressive article clonic.

So I can resume downloads right? Otherwise it wouldn't be of much help.
